• Census, 1901. Listed as aged 21 and aboard HMS Sappho, which at the time was at the port of Lorenco Marques, Delogoa Bay, on the East Coast of Africa (now Maputo Bay, Mozambique). His occupation was Able Seaman.

HMS Sappho was a Apollo second class cruiser. Built as part of the naval defence act of 1889, along with her twenty other sister ships. These cruisers were enlarged version of the Medea Class. HMS Sappho was built by Samuda,Poplar, launched 9th May 1891 and commissioned in 1893. Sold and Scrapped in 1921.
